A Salmonella outbreak that includes at least 21 cases in the U.S. and another 34 in Canada has triggered a number of recalls for products that are potentially contaminated. If a chia powder product you have purchased is part of the recall, do not use it.
In the U.S., chia powder products that have been recalled include the brand names Navitas Naturals, Williams Sonoma and Green Smoothie Girl. The recalled Navitas Natural products include Navitas Naturals Organic Sprouted Chia Powder in the 8 oz size with the UPC 858847000369 and all best by dates up to and including 11/22/2015; and Navitas Naturals Omega Blend Sprouted Smoothie Mix in the 8 oz size with the UPC 858847000314 and all best by dates up to and including 11/05/2015.
The recalled Williams-Sonoma product is Williams-Sonoma Omega 3 Smoothie Mixer in 8 oz size with the SKU 506436 and all best by dates up to and including OC 2015.
The recalled Green Smoothie Girl products were sold at retail stores in UT, OR, MT and through Internet sales. They include GreenSmoothieGirl Sprouted Ground TriOmega Superfood in the 16 oz size with the UPC 853811005036, lot number AC030141, and Exp. 1/2016 in a silver Ziplock pouch; and GreenSmoothieGirl Sprouted Ground TriOmega Superfood in the 16 oz size with no UPC, the lot number BIO13TOP300, the Exp. 10/2015 in a gold Ziplock pouch.
In Canada, the chia powder recall includes products sold under the brand names Organic Traditions, Back 2 the Garden and Pete’s Gluten Free Sprouted Fiber Blend by Finally Gluten Free, Intuitive Path SuperFoods, and Harmonic Arts Botanical Dispensary.
Organic Traditions has recalled Sprouted Chia Seed Powder and Sprouted Chia & Flax Sees Powder in four sizes.The recalled Organic Traditions Sprouted Chia Seed Powder includes four sizes: 227 g, 454 g, 25 lb and 50 lb. It includes all codes starting with BIO13 and ending with 269 up to and including 365; and all codes starting with BIO14 and ending with 001 up to and including 156227g. The 227 g size has the UPC number 8 54260 00616 2, the 454g size has the UPC number 8 54260 00546 2. The 25 lb and 50 lb sizes do not have UPC numbers.
The recalled Organic Traditions Sprouted Chia & Fax Seed Powder was sold in the same four sizes with the same code information but the UPC number for the 227 g size has the UPC number 8 54260 00621 6 and the 454 g size has the UPC number 8 54260 00547 9.
The recalled Back 2 the Garden Sprouted Chia Seed Powder includes 200 g packages with all codes starting with BIO13 and ending with 269 up to and including 365 and all codes starting with BIO14 and ending with 001 up to and including 156.
The recalled Pete’s Gluten Free Sprouted Fiber Blend was sold in 400 g packages with the “Best Before” date May 28 2016.
The recalled Intuitive Path SuperFoods products are: Black Sprouted Chia Seeds Certified Organic in 227 gram containers. There is no UPC number, and the best before dates are Dec 31/14, Jan 1/16, and 05/16; and Intuitive Path SuperFoods Black Sprouted Chia Seeds Certified Organic in 454 gram containers. The best before dates are Jan 1/16, 05/16 with no UPC number.
Harmonic Arts Botanical Dispensary Chia Seed Sprouted and Ground (Salvia hispanica) Organic in 227 gram containers with the UPC number 1 37101 61797 1 and the code 0290 BEST BEFORE 2016/05 is being recalled. So is Harmonic Arts Botanical Dispensary Chia Seed Sprouted and Ground (Salvia hispanica) Organic is recalled, sold in 454 gram containers. That product has the code 0290 BEST BEFORE 2016/05, and the UPC number 1 37101 62797 0.
Naturallyorganic Organic sprouted chia seeds cold milled are also recalled. They were sold in 250 gram containers, with code B1013SBC310 and the UPC number0 83747 00342 8.
Consumers who have purchased any of these products should not use them as Salmonella can cause serious illness. Three strains of Salmonella have been detected in the 21 U.S. cases: Salmonella Newport, 13 cases; Salmonella Hartford, six cases and Salmonella Oranienburg, two cases. Two people have been hospitalized. The number of cases from each state is as follows: Arizona (1), California (3), Colorado (1), Connecticut (3), Florida (1), Massachusetts (1), Michigan (1), New York (4), Ohio (1), Utah (1), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (3).
In Canada, two Salmonella strains have been associated with this outbreak: Salmonella Newport and Salmonella Hartford. Cases have been reported from four provinces: British Columbia (6), Alberta (4), Ontario (22) and Quebec (2). Five people have been hospitalized. Of those, four have been released and are recovering.
